RED SNAPPER

Also known as Humpback red snappers – one of the most commonly caught fish species of the Maldives. They tend to stay in large schools close to channel corners and other areas with stronger currents around the reefs inside of atolls. This species can reach a length of 10 – 50 cm.

Grouper

Indian Ocean boasts wide variety of grouper species, mostly found around reefs inside of the atoll. Groupers tend to stay hidden in caves, wrecks or other areas protecting them from predators, leaving their cover only when hunting. Maximum length may range from 15 cm to few meters depending on species.

Wahoo

Simultaneously a fish species and an­ exclamation derived from their blistering speed. Beyond question, the best part of wahoo fishing is hearing that reel scream! For a fish that swim at least 90 km/h, high-speed trolling is certainly an effective way to catch Wahoo. Usually found in open water further away from the reefs. This species can reach a length of 50 cm to few meters.

Yellowfin tuna

Among the larger tuna species, reaching weights over 180 kg – Yellowfin tuna is one of the signature catches of the Maldives. Most popular among local fisherman, composing majority of Maldives fish exports because of its size and very high quality. Mainly found in deep waters outside of atolls and further away from the reefs inside of atolls.

BARRACUDA

Known for its large size, fearsome appearance and ferocious behavior. Barracudas are opportunistic predators, relying on surprise and short bursts of speed, up to 45 km/h to overtake their prey – usually found close to the surface near atoll outside coral reefs. Fishing lines with braided steel ends are often used to catch Barracudas as they are able to chow through regular fishing lines with their extremely sharp teeth.

Giant Trevally

Also known as Jack fish – The giant trevally is an apex predator in most of its habitats, and is known to hunt individually and in schools. Most commonly found in open water outside of atolls, close to channel entrances and further away from the reefs inside of atolls. The fish grows relatively fast, reaching s length of around 60 cm at three years of age, growing up to maximum known size of about 170 cm.

SAILFISH

Predominantly blue to gray in color and have a characteristic fin known as a sail, which often stretches the entire length of the back. Another notable characteristic is the elongated bill, resembling that of the swordfish and marlin. Sailfish grow quickly, reaching 1.2–1.5 m in length in a single year, reaching maximum lenght of around 3 m. Found feeding on the surface or at middle depths in open waters outside of atolls.

BLACK MARLIN

Are you ready for the Ultimate catch of lifetime? Take your chance on the Black marlin! Reaching maximum lengths of more than 4 meters it is known as one of the largest bony fish. It is one of the fastest fish species as well, having been recorded unwinding fishing line at 129 km/h. Found in open water areas far away from the atolls, it is necessary to arrange a custom private fishing trips to increase your chances of the ultimate catch. Being able to trump one of them will most certainly earn you a place in our fishing hall of fame!
